Cannabis in New York: a visitor's guide

New York does not require you to live in the state to purchase adult-use cannabis. The only requirements at the register are that you are 21 or older and that you show valid identification. What ID to bring

New York accepts a valid federal, state, or local government photo ID that shows your age, including a driver's license from any state, a passport, an armed forces ID, or IDNYC. Where you can and cannot use it

New York generally allows adults to smoke or vape cannabis in the places where smoking tobacco is allowed, which is more permissive than most states. But the exceptions matter and cities add their own rules: parks, beaches, pedestrian plazas, restaurants and bars, indoor workplaces, schools, and inside vehicles are off limits, and hotels set their own policies, so many prohibit smoking in rooms. What you cannot do with it when you leave

Do not take it home. Cannabis remains illegal under federal law, so carrying it across state lines or out of the country is a federal offense even if both places have legalized it, and airports fall under federal jurisdiction. Do not drive under the influence. Non-citizens should be aware that cannabis can carry immigration consequences, including at border crossings, regardless of state law. Plan to finish or leave behind whatever you buy.
